The Xtreme games arguably do make things worse though cause that kind of reputation is hard to ignore I think they could overcome that if DOA6 was good enough in other areas though. Those games dont really get crap for the fanservice as much but DOA6 still has a stigma attached to it despite that. The sexuality seems like a pretty mute point to me when a game like Skullgirls can still have a pretty dedicated fanbase, or heck, even the BlazBlue games with alot of characters built around fan-service.

There are many people out there who are more passionate and feel more strongly about DoA than I am. I can’t speak for the gameplay intricacies of DoA 6, but from what I can tell from others, there were some issues in a few mechanics or maybe DoA 5 just played better or something.Īnd I can’t speak for how much has improved either, ‘cause it doesn’t get talked about a lot. Apparently, that was handled in the worst way possible. Oh, and uh, something something DLC hair color. This is a game that tried to be friends with everyone, but it doesn’t have a distinct appeal, largely because the developers made a bunch of avoidable mistakes. And at launch, there weren’t even lobbies, so playing with friends online was impossible at the time, you could only play ranked, so online competitive play was complicated if not impossible. Regardless, for a game meant to be accessible, the unlockable costumes were player-hostile since you had to either pay a boatload of cash or pay a boatload of time spent grinding, which is not fun for anyone. Now, the developers did fall back and bring the suggestive costumes, but it didn’t do much to save the game since the damage had already been done. It was going to be a tournament fighter, which to the developers meant toning down the sexuality to the consternation to many long-time fans, but, in fairness while it could’ve payed off in terms of exposure and appeal, they didn’t even do a good job at that, with EVO Japan 2019 being an example.

This is a game that didn’t know what it wanted to be. This is in my opinion the biggest problem with DoA DoA 6 season pass 1 was $93 for a bunch of costumes and only two characters (both of which were in DoA 5 yes, the roster got smaller in DoA 6).Īnd then DoA 6 happened. Hundreds of dollars for a bunch of costumes is not what the average consumer wants, but it’s a practice that has been repeated.

This is not helped by its Xtreme spin-offs which were genuinely poorly received.Īnd then there’s the DLC. It’s kind of destined to be niche ‘cause of this direction. It’s definitely Japanese in its execution. While I don’t think it’s inherently bad, I do think it, along with its sense of humor, doesn’t suit the western taste. It doesn’t help that it’s sexuality has been a subject of controversy.

and the later games have unappealing business practices that no one wants to participate in.ĭoA sells decently and I’m personally grateful that DoA 5 and 6 are free to play, but it overall doesn’t get much awareness in the U.S. The games are not well marketed in the U.S.
